ChatGPT-4 is here!

One of the most well-known names in technology today is OpenAI. The artificial intelligence (AI) startup has built realistic image generators, 3D model creators and recently, the tool it is now famous for — ChatGPT.

With its ability to pass legal examinations, write lengthy feature-length blog posts, and even develop entire websites, ChatGPT has everyone talking about the true potential of AI.

Now, the software that powers ChatGPT has undergone a significant update. Although the software has been operating on GPT-3 technology, OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.

Although they aren’t precisely catchy names, GPT-3 and now GPT-4 are the most well-known language-processing AI models on the internet.

While less capable than human operators in many real-world scenarios, ChatGPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on different academic and professional metrics,” OpenAI mentioned in its press release.

Sam Altman, the Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of OpenAI, added, “ It is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.

With the ability to read, analyze, and produce up to 25,000 words of text, GPT-4 has surpassed its predecessor in intelligence.

According to Alex Banks of Tribescaler, it is 82% less likely to respond to requests for prohibited content. Compared to GPT-3.5, it is 40% more likely to produce factual responses.

What, then, is ChatGPT-4? How does it work? And is this really where AI is going? Below, we address these questions and the critical differences between ChatGPT-3 and GPT-4.

Although ChatGPT and Dall-E, two AI language models that continue to wow people with their powers, are built on OpenAI’s GPT-3.x family of large language models.

The most recent and sophisticated GPT model created by OpenAI is GPT-4 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 4). It is a large-scale machine learning model trained on a vast quantity of data to produce text that resembles that of a human.

GPT-2, GPT-3, ChatGPT, and, very likely, GPT-4 all belong to the same family of AI language models — transformers. This indicates that they are well-trained to solve more unified problems than the previous generation of machine learning models (also known as “ Meta-Learning “), eliminating the need for them to be retrained to give valid results for each unique task.

ChatGPT-4 builds on the fame and accomplishments of GPT-3, which was announced in May 202 and instantly became one of the most popular natural language processing (NLP) models. GPT-4 is larger and more advanced than GPT-3, with 170 trillion parameters compared to GPT-3’s 175 billion parameters. This enables ChatGPT-4 to process and produce text more precisely and fluently.

Benefits of ChatGPT-4

One of the key benefits of ChatGPT-4 is its ability to comprehend and produce a variety of natural language texts, including both formal and informal texts. As a result, it can be leveraged to accomplish a variety of tasks, including question answering, text summarization, and language translation. Additionally, because GPT-4 can learn from various data sources, it can be tailored for certain tasks and domains, making it highly adaptive and versatile.

ChatGPT-4 also surpasses ChatGPT in its advanced reasoning capabilities.

In addition to its excellent language processing capabilities, GPT-4 has the potential to be leveraged for a variety of other activities, including video and image generation. This is because GPT-4 is based on the Transformer architecture, which has proven useful for several ML tasks like computer vision (CV).

Here are some examples of what ChatGPT-4 could be leveraged for:

  • Language Translation: GPT-4 is useful for machine translation applications because it can comprehend and produce natural language text. It could be trained on a large dataset of translated texts to enhance its precision and fluidity.
  • Text summarization: ChatGPT-4’s ability to produce text that resembles human speech may be helpful for tasks like text summarization since the output text needs to be easy to understand and read.
  • Question Answering: GPT-4 can answer questions and give thorough explanations, which may be helpful in applications like customer service or technical assistance.
  • Image & Video Generation: The foundation of GPT-4, the Transformer architecture, has proven efficient for a range of machine learning tasks, including computer vision. This means that ChatGPT-4 can be used for image and video generation tasks.
  • Conversational AI: ChatGPT-4 can be used to build more human-centric chatbots and virtual assistants. This way, it can engage in more fluid and natural conversations with its users.
  • Other Applications: ChatGPT-4’s adaptability and creativity make it a promising AI model for various NLP applications. For example, it could be used for automated news and article writing, chatbots, and even creative writing.

Compared to ChatGPT-3, how is ChatGPT-4 superior and unique in terms of capabilities, performance, and potential applications? With the release of ChatGPT-4, these are some of the crucial questions that every tech enthusiast and organization will be looking for.

The following section highlights the differences between ChatGPT-4 and GPT-3 and the features that set them apart. Let’s dive right in!

1. ChatGPT-4 Can See and Understand Images

GPT-4 can respond to inputs of both text and graphics and generate text outputs based on the data provided. The visual input is still in its infancy but already exhibits abilities similar to text-only inputs.

This AI model differs from its predecessor in such a way that it can accept both text and photos. As output, it can produce natural language text consistent with the input. However, it is important to note that while the AI model can parse both text and image input, it can only give responses in the text at present.

2. Longer Memory

The maximum limit in ChatGPT-3.5 and GPT-3 was 4,096 “tokens”, or about 8,000 words or 4–5 pages of a book. In comparison, the maximum token count for GPT-4 is 32,768, which equates to about 64,000 words or 50 pages of text.

It will recall the conversation you discussed 15 pages ago in chat, or it might refer to occurrences that took place 25 pages ago while writing a novel or essay. This is a very rough representation of how the attention mechanism and token count function, but the general idea is that of extended memory and the skills that accompany it.

If we analyze these AI tools, it appears that mechanical minds are outperforming human brains in terms of intellectual insight, artistic creativity, processing speed, and memory capacity.

However, the mind being trained in these AI models differs significantly from how the human mind thinks and communicates. ChatGPT is not like the human mind. The human mind generates results using small amounts of data instead of feeding on hundreds of terabytes of data, finding patterns, and generating the most likely response to a scientific question.

We often draw analogies between the human mind and the AI mind, making this distinction crucial.

3. ChatGPT-4 is More Multilingual

The world of AI is so far greatly dominated by English speakers. Almost everything from articles to research papers to tests is in English. In order to test its language capabilities, OpenAI evaluated ChatGPT-4 on legacy benchmarks designed for ML models, where it surpassed existing large language models that may include crafting or training protocols. These benchmarks included a suite of 14,000 multiple-choice problems spanning 57 subjects, multiple-choice science questions, reasoning capabilities, and more.

ChatGPT-4 outperformed the English-language performance of its predecessors in 24 out of the 26 languages tested. It also offers greater “steerability,” which refers to control over responses using a “personality” you choose. For example, you can ask it to reply like Yoda, a pirate, or anything else you can think of.

The actual reasons for GPT-4’s improvement still remain unknown. After a thorough briefing on GPT-4, MIT Technology Review stated that although it is “ bigger and better,” nobody knows why. This may be because OpenAI is no longer a nonprofit researcher but a for-profit software company. OpenAI will no longer disclose the number of parameters used to train ChatGPT-4, although automated content generator AX Semantics estimates 100 trillion.

This brings “ the language model closer to the workings of the human brain concerning language and logic,” states AX Semantics.

4. ChatGPT-4 Can’t be Fooled Easily

Despite AI’s advancements, it is simpler to deceive chatbots and get them to behave differently than they are designed to.

GPT-4, on the other hand, has undergone considerable training using several malicious prompts based on the information users submitted to OpenAI. With these prompts, the latest model significantly outperforms its predecessors in factuality, steerability, and staying within predetermined boundaries.

5. It is “Safer”

OpenAI states that ChatGPT-4 is safer than GPT-3.5 and GPT-3.

The company has worked for over six months to ensure that GPT-4 is secure by enhancing its monitoring framework and collaborating with professionals in domains like medicine and geopolitics to ensure safe and precise replies. The system was “ 82 percent less likely to reply to requests for disallowed content and 40 percent more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5,” according to OpenAI’s introduction of GPT-4.

Within a few months of its launch, ChatGPT became one of the most widely used AI language tools. This, in turn, resulted in server capacity issues, so it didn’t take long enough for OpenAI to offer a paid version of the tool.

The paid version of the tool is called ChatGPT Plus (or ChatGPT+) and costs $20 per month. The company started a Plus pilot early in February 2023 — which went global on February 10 — making ChatGPT+ the primary way for people to access the GPT-4 tool.

To leverage the underlying GPT-4 tool, you need a free OpenAI account. Then look for the Upgrade to Plus link in the dashboard. If there is a capacity issue (which is one of the problems ChatGPT+ is designed to fix), you might not be able to sign in.

An account with OpenAI is one of many possible ways for those who want access to the GPT-4 technology. Another service powered by GPT-4 is Poe Subscriptions on Quora; the company is also collaborating with Claude, the “friendly, honest, and harmless” AI chatbot rival from Anthropic.

OpenAI has also made the application programming interface (API) for ChatGPT-4 available to developers, so you can expect it to show up in other services shortly.

The Bottom Line

With its capacity to both ask and answer questions, ChatGPT-4 represents a significant advancement in AI. OpenAI announced new partnerships with several tech companies, including language learning app Duolingo and Be My Eyes, to build AI chatbots that can help users with natural language.

However, like all AI models, OpenAI has warned that ChatGPT-4 is still in its nascent stages and may “hallucinate” — a concept where AI invents facts or makes errors in reasoning. Therefore, it’s essential to consider these limitations and work towards addressing them to improve efficiency and impact.
